04 Jun Support Norfolk – What’s It All About?
We wanted to do something to help
Well, who could have predicted the whole country shutting down for a few months due to a public health crisis? It’s hit us all hard with everyone facing their own personal set of challenges. In many ways, we’re some of the fortunate ones. We’ve stayed fit and well, our business is ticking over (just!), and the pressures of home-schooling a 5-year-old are not as demanding as for many older children – at least we can understand his maths!
But, with so many people we know putting themselves at risk every day to help others during this crisis, we wanted to do something to help.
Many of our friends are small business owners, like us, who are all trying their hardest to keep everything afloat as their places or work are closed down, their events are cancelled, and their customers have disappeared. It’s tough.
But being in business is often about adapting to adversity. And all around us, businesses are doing that admirably, displaying ingenuity, courage and kindness.
Support Norfolk is about celebrating that. It’s about giving local businesses a single platform to share their business updates with the wider community.
What can you find on Support Norfolk?
Some of the business updates are about how companies are adapted so they can continue to help and support customers – be that through online orders, local deliveries or producing new and innovative products.
Some of those updates are about how the community can support businesses through this difficult time – by buying vouchers, or donating towards future events – so there is a business for everyone to come back to.
They are all about supporting the local economy in one way or another so that Norfolk, and all the fantastic businesses it’s home to, continues to thrive.
As well as the website, we’ve created a vibrant Instagram page where we’ve really enjoyed sharing positive stories from local businesses to help get the word about all the wonderful things that are going on in our communities. It’s truly inspiring stuff!
What’s the future of Support Norfolk?
At the moment, we’re not sure! It was set up with one objective – to share business updates during the coronavirus pandemic. And it will be there in that capacity for as long as it’s needed. But, as things being to return to a “new normal”, the original function of the site will be less important.
But with other 100 local businesses now listed on the site, it would be a shame to completely bin it. It was designed as a not-for-profit community website, and we’re keen to retain that ethos. So, being a community site, any suggestions you may have as to what would be helpful going forward would be gratefully received!
